First Buckingham Palace Garden Party of 2019
On May 15; the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Princess Royal hosted the first of this year’s garden parties on behalf of the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Charles met 91 year-old former athlete Iva Barr, who met the Queen and Princess Margaret on VE Day when they were allowed to roam incognito across the streets of London. Charles said that he would “definitely tell the Queen he met another person who was there that night”. Mrs. Barr competed in athletic competitions for 30 years and retired in 2016 at the age of 88.
Over the course of three months from May – July, 30,000 guests will be invited to garden parties at both Buckingham Palace and Holyrood House respectively.
The tradition of royal garden parties goes back to Queen Victoria, who introduced them in the 1860s and referred to them as “royal breakfasts”.
