Duchess of Cambridge awarded Royal Victorian Order by the Queen

Coinciding with her eighth wedding anniversary to the Duke of Cambridge, whom she married on 29 April 2011, the Duchess of Cambridge was granted the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order for “services to the sovereign” as announced by Buckingham Palace today.

The Royal Victorian Order is a dynastic knighthood and was established by Queen Victoria in 1896 ahead of her Diamond Jubilee. The Dame Grand Cross is the highest position of the order for women, with the medal being the lowest in rank. The order itself is said to be the “highest seal of approval” from the Queen.

The Princess Royal has been the Grand Master of the order since 2007, and the Duchess of Cornwall received the order in 2012 upon her seventh wedding anniversary, whilst the Countess of Wessex received the order in 2010, a decade after she married her husband Prince Edward.
