Prince of Wales at Spanish impressionist exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery

On March 13, the Prince of Wales was accompanied by Queen Letizia of Spain as they attended an exhibition showcasing some of the works of Spanish impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England.

Prince Charles’s cousin Lady Sarah Chatto was also part of the entourage that showed the pair around the exhibition; which showcased portraits and landscapes including that of Princess Beatrice of Battenberg, whose daughter Victoria Eugenie married Alfonso XIII of Spain.

Several Spanish guests were also at the event, including Tamara Rojo, a famous Spanish ballerina. In 1990 Letizia’s mother-in-law Queen Sofia also attended an exhibition showcasing eighteenth century Spanish paintings, whilst in 2006 her sister-in-law Infanta Cristina opened a Velázquez exhibiton, which director Dr. Gabriele Findeli described as “historic occasions” for the National Portrait Gallery.

The exhibition is entitled Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light and is the first British exhibition for the Spanish impressionist and runs from March – July. Sorolla was born in 1863 and began painting at the age of 9 in his native town in Valencia. At 22 he studied in Rome for four years, though he was first exposed to modern painting in Paris during the 1890s. Sorolla died in 1923 with some of his most famous works being Another Marguerite (1892) and The Return From Fishing (1894).
