British royal family at Commonwealth Day service
On March 11; the Queen was joined by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who were earlier also performing other related engagements, at a Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in London, England.
British Prime Minister Theresa May was also at the service, and band Clean Bandit gave a performance. Faith leaders, high commissioners, ambassadors as well as 800 invited schoolchildren were also at the service.
Commonwealth Day is celebrated annually, often on the second Monday in March, and celebrates the Commonwealth of Nations, which contains 53 member states and was founded in 1926 under the Balfour Declaration. Each year the celebrations have a different theme, of which this year’s was “A Connected Commonwealth”.
In Gibraltar, Commonwealth Day is observed as a public holiday, though in most other Commonwealth countries it is not an official public holiday.
