Dutch King and Queen Visit the West-Friesland Region

Today, Thursday June 28, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima paid a visit to the West-Friesland in the province of Noord-Holland. The visit began in the municipality of Hoorn where the Royal Couple was welcomed by Johan Remkes, the King’s Commissioner in the province of Noord-Holland and Jan Nieuwenburg, Mayor of Hoorn.
The first stop was at the Oostereiland, an artificial island constructed between 1662 and 1668 in the harbor of Hoorn with a shipyard and warehouses. Between 1829 and 2003 the complex was used as prison. After a renovation ended in 2012, the former prison was transformed into a cinema, officies, a hotel and a space was also used for the creation of the Museum of the Twentieth Century.

The Royal Couple was informed about the renewal of the Oostereiland and spoke with the director of the Museum of the 20th Century. After a short walk and a boat trip by sustainable water taxi through the harbor, the King and the Queen moved to the municipality of Drechterland.
There the Royal Couple visited the construction site of the new provincial road route N23 Westfrisiaweg, a project of the Heijmans infrastructure company. The King and the Queen met with Ton Hillen, Heijmans CEO and the project manager, Otto van Lookeren to have an explanation about the project.

Then they moved to Grootebroek, a village in the municipality of Stede Broec where took place a roundtable meeting in the cafeteria of De Zouaven football club.
At the meeting, focused on the prevention of alcohol and drugs among young people, were present parents, professional, volunteers and members of the Team BAD (Team Aware Alcohol and Drugs).
Afterwards, in the municipality of Enkhuizen, the Royal Couple paid a visit to the vegetable breeding private company. The family business, founded in 1938, develops new vegetable varieties that are selling worldwide and has branches in 25 countries and employs 2000 people. the company also owns an internal training institute, the Enza Academy that aims to offer training sessions to young talents and managers.
The King and the Queen were informed abou the Academy but also the development of vegetable varieties. Then, at the Station Café, the Royal Couple attended a roundtable discussion focused on the agri- and food sector.

The regional visit ended in the municipality of Medemblik where they visited the International Sailing Center Medemblik (ISC Medemblik), the sailing competition center of the Netherlands. The sailing center, the second official training location in the world, organize international events and training sessions for talented youth. During the visit the King and the Queen attended a sailing demonstration and met with talented young sailors.
