Horticulture and Art For A Velvet-Clad Máxima

Dutch Queen Máxima undertook several engagements on Wednesday March 7th. She first opened the World Horti Center in Westland, accompanied by Carola Schouten, Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

The World Horti Center is the knowledge and innovation center of the international greenhouse horticulture sector.  The center “reunites members of business, education, research and government in order to innovate, connect, create and inspire together”. Every year the center is visited by some 25,000 industry people.

It also offers lectures at higher professional and university level for both students and businesses focused on industry research sustainable applications to answer global issues such as food security, food safety, water management, sustainability and health.

During the visit the Queen toured the building and she visited various classrooms, the auditorium, the exhibition space of companies and the greenhouse with research departments.

Afterwards, it was on to Maastricht where the Queen – in burgundy velvet and check – visited the Van Eyck Institute, an international post-academy for research and production in the fields of fine art, design and art theory, was founded in 1948 and was named after the painter Jan van Eyck.

The institute is open to young and advanced artists, designers, photographers, architects, writers, curators, thinkers who can work in their own studio, participate in the Van Eyck projects and develop their artistic talents in a versatile way.

Upon her arrival at the insitute the Queen was welcomed by Lex ter Braak, director of the Van Eyck and Birgit Donker, director of the Mondriaan Fund. During the visit Queen Maxima attended a round table discussion focused about talent development in the visual arts, the Van Eyck approach and the cooperation with museums and education and cultural entrepreneurship.

The Queen also toured the exhibition “Point-Loops-Blooming” that will be opened from tomorrow March 8 until April 13 and met with the artists from the Netherlands, Mexico, Ghana and Argentina who participated in the making of the exhibition.
