Belgian King and Queen Attend the Krakelingenstoet Festival
Yesterday, Sunday February 25, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of The Belgians were present at the Krakelingenstoet Festival in Geraardsbergen, a municipality in the southern part of the Belgian province of East Flanders.
The festival consists of a historic folkloristic procession with approximately 1,000 participants that highlights centuries of history of Geraardsbergen.
The 2018 edition of the Krakelingenstoet Festival marks the 950th anniversary of the charter of liberty of the city, granted by Baudouin IV in 1068 to the Grammontois. In 2008 the festival was included in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage Flanders and in 2010 was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Along with the Royal Couple were present Guido De Padt, mayor of Geraardsbergen, Jan Briers, Governor of the East Flanders, Pieter De Crem, Secretary of State and the Ministers Joke Schauvliege and Alexander De Croo.
