Prince Henrik’s Casket Transferred to Amalienborg

At 10am this morning, local time, a hearse carrying the casket of the late Prince Henrik of Denmark – who died Tuesday evening at the age of 83 – left Fredensborg Palace to transport the late Prince to Copenhagen ahead of his funeral next week.

Making up the cortege were three crown cars, carrying Prince Henrik’s immediate family: wife Queen Margrethe II, sons Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, daughters-in-law Crown Princess Mary and Princess Marie, and grandchildren Princes Nikolai, Felix, Christian, Henrik and Vincent and Princesses Isabella, Josephine and Athena.

The cortege slowly made its way around Fredensborg as a ‘farewell’ to the Prince’s home, before beginning the hour-long drive to the capital.

After the cortege had arrived at Amalienborg, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim with their families went out into the Palace square to view the floral and written tributes left by members of the Danish public in Prince Henrik’s honour. Queen Margrethe did the same thing on Wednesday evening at Fredensborg Palace.

On Friday, Prince Henrik’s casket will be transferred to Christiansborg Slotskirke, where it will lie ‘Castrum Doloris’ until the funeral service on Tuesday morning. Members of the public will be able to pay their respects on Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoons.
