32m Underground: Charles and Camilla Open New London Power Tunnels
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were charged with officially opening the London Power Tunnels project of the National Grid UK on Wednesday, at the Highbury sub-station in London.
Ahead of the opening – where Charles and Camilla pushed the large red button with Snap’s I’ve Got The Power playing in the background – the Prince donned a fluro orange hi-vis jacket and hard hat, and headed 32km underground for a tour of the power tunnels.
Camilla, meanwhile, stayed above ground, meeting staff, engineers and apprentices who have worked on the Tunnels; and students visiting the National Grid education centre to learn about the Tunnels and other STEM subjects.
The London Power Tunnels is a “32km electricity superhighway” under London, designed to increase electricity output for the nation’s capital.
