The jury responsible for awarding the 2009 award for the Arts, presided over by José Lladó y Fernández-Urrutia, has agreed to bestow this prestigious award to Sir Norman Robert Foster, “whose work of universal scope combines aesthetic quality, intellectual reflection and a dialogue between territory and citizens via an original mastery of space, light and matter. Norman Foster, an architect of the global era, brilliantly anticipates the only polis possible in the 21st century, one that is at the service of sustainable development and of personal and social freedom”.

Norman Foster was born in Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1935. He was graduated by Manchester University School of Architecture and City Planning in 1961 he won a Henry Fellowship to Yale University, where he gained a Master’s Degree in Architecture.

The award ceremony will take place in autumn at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, capital of the Principality of Asturias. It will be presided over by the Prince of Asturias, Honorary President of the Prince of Asturias Foundation.
