Visit to Sri Lanka On The Agenda For The Wessexes
The British High Commission in Sri Lanka confirmed on Thursday that the Earl and Countess of Wessex will be visiting Sri Lanka to attend celebrations marking the nation’s 70th anniversary of independence from Great Britain.
Edward and Sophie will spend five days in Sri Lanka – from January 31 to February 4 – and visit Colombo amongst other cities. The couple’s engagements will highlight the “shared interest in the Commonwealth, youth development and education” between the UK and Sri Lanka.
On February 4, they will attend official independence anniversary celebrations. This was the day in 1948 that the Ceylon Independence Act 1947 came into effect and the British Colony of Ceylon became the Dominion of Ceylon. Ceylon became a republic in 1972, and its name was changed to Sri Lanka.
