Queen Maxima Awards Prince Bernhard Cultural Prize
Today, Monday November 27, Queen Maxima presented the Prince Bernhard Cultural Prize 2017 at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ concert hall in Amsterdam. This year the award went to the writer Geert Mak.
Geert Mak is a Dutch lawyer, journalist and writer of history books. He received this award for “his great record as a writer of books about our history. Because of his unrivaled narrative style, he has brought history to life for many. And not only the history of the Netherlands, but also that of Europe.”
The prize of the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund is a sum of 75,000 euros with an addition of another 75,000 euros that the winner can use as capital of a culture fund. Geert Mak planned to use the 75,000 euros to the establishment of the Geert Mak Fund that aims to support historians and authors of biographies in their research for new work.
The Prince Bernhard Cultural Prize is awarded to individuals or institutions that have made success in the field of music, theater, dance, visual arts, history, literature, heritage, cultural or nature conservation. The Prince Bernhard Culture Fund was created in London in 1940 by Prince Bernhard, husband of Queen Juliana.
