Emperor Akihito Meets With US President Trump At Imperial Palace
The Emperor and Empress of Japan today welcomed United States President Donald Trump to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo for an audience.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko greeted the President and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, outside the Palace entrance before the 20-minute long audience, during which the monarch and the President discussed the strong relationship between Japan and the United States that has been achieved in the years since World War II.
“Although the two countries have a history of fighting each other in war, Japan has become what it is now thanks to the friendly relationship afterward as well as support from the United States,” a statement from the Imperial Household Agency said after the meeting.
Emperor Akihito expressed his sympathies to President Trump following Sunday’s mass shooting in Texas; while the President complimented the design of the Imperial Palace.
President Trump is currently on his first tour of Asia.
