Royals in Denmark and Norway Mark 500 Years Since The Reformation
The 500th anniversary of the Reformation was celebrated in Denmark and Norway today, with members of each respective country’s royal family in attendance.
At Christiansborg Palace, the Danish Parliament, the Danish Royal Family attended the government’s official commemoration of the anniversary, where Queen Margrethe II delivered a speech, saying that “the Denmark we know today can not be imagined without the Reformation.”
A concert was hosted in the evening at the DR Byen Concert House.
Over in Norway, King Harald V was joined by Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit at a service of ecumenical worship at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Leaders from the different religions in Norway spoke about “cooperation, unity and fellowship in faith” at the service.
The Reformation began on October 31, 1517 with the publication of Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses. It started the decline of the Catholic Church in northern Europe.
