Prinsjesdag 2017

On Tuesday September 19, the Dutch Royal Family celebrated the traditional opening of Parliament, Prinsjesdag.

King Willem-Alexander was joined by his wife, Queen Máxima, his brother Prince Constantijn and his sister-in-law, Princess Laurentien. The Dutch Royals left Noordeinde Palace at around 13:00 heading to the Knight’s Hall in the Glass Carriage through the streets of The Hague.

Princess Beatrix saw the procession of the carriages from the window of the Royal Cabinet.

The King began his speech with a mention to the inhabitants of Saint Martin, Saba and Saint Eustatius that were affected by the devastating hurricane Irma. Then he continued talking about the positive development in the Netherlands, more people have a job and buy a house and the investments are growing.

The King also talked about the terrorist attacks of the past weeks, stating that “the best answer to terrorism is that we stick to our way of life”. King Willem-Alexander also stated the Netherlans is working with European Union, NATO, the United Nations to “cope with the many international tasks”, and he also stressed the importance of the Paris climate agreement to fight against climate change. The King ended his speech saying that “for the government, there is a permanent task to work on growth and a better life for everyone living in our country”.

At around 14:00, the Dutch Royal Family left the Ridderzaal heading back to the Noordeinde Palace where the traditional balcony appearance took place.

Her Majesty Queen Maxima wore a custom-made a-line gown made of a transparent brocade with flowers in an aquamarine color from the fashion house Natan of Belgian designer Edouard Vermeulen. It was paired with a matching little hat.

Princess Laurentien wore a custom-made gold-green jacquard gown from the fashion house Hardies of The Hague. It was paired with a hat made of the same fabric of the gown.
