Bright In Blue: Queen Elizabeth Opens Record-Breaking New Bridge in Scotland

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh were on hand Monday to officially open the new Queensferry Crossing, the third bridge across the Firth of Forth.

They first greeted school children and construction workers on the south side of the bridge, before travelling across the bridge in a state car as the RAF Red Arrows performed a flypast overhead. Once on the south side of the bridge, the Queen – who stood out from the abundance of greys and blacks in a sky blue Stuart Parvin outfit and matching Angela Kelly hat (the tone of which was reminiscent of the Scottish flag) – cut a ribbon and delivered a speech to mark the opening.

“The Queensferry crossing joins its iconic and historic neighbors to create not only a breathtaking sight across the Firth of Forth, but to provide an important link for so many in this community and the surrounding areas,” Her Majesty said of the new structure, which cost £1.35 billion to construct and is the world’s longest triple tower cable-stayed bridge in the world.

Also attending the opening was the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.
