Sweden’s Newest Prince Named Gabriel
During a special Council of State at the Royal Palace of Stockholm this morning, King Carl XVI Gustaf announced the name of his newest grandchild, the second son of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, who was born on Thursday last week.
The infant has been named Gabriel Carl Walther, and has been given the Duchy of Dalarna by the King. The choice of Dalarna is one with strong familial ties to the newborn, as Princess Sofia lived in Älvdalen, a city within Dalarna County, from the age of six. The last Duke of Dalarna was Carl Johan Bernadotte, the last surviving great-grandchild of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, who lost the title in 1946 upon his unequal marriage.
Members of the Royal Family later attended a Te Deum thanksgiving service at the Royal Palace Chapel.
