100 Years On: Royals Mark Centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele

On July 31, the Prince of Wales, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Vice Admiral Tim Laurence and King and Queen of the Belgians attended commemorations of the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele at the Tyne Cot ceremony near Ypres.

Prince Charles gave a speech during the ceremony, where he said “we remember it is not only for the rain that fell, the mud that weighed down the living and swallowed the dead, but also for the courage and bravery of the men who fought here”.

Sigmar Gabriel, the Foreign Minister of Germany, also took part in the laying of the wreaths with the British and Belgian royals. British Prime Minister Theresa May attended and during the ceremony she read a passage from the Biblical book Ecclesiasticus.
