Australian Prime Minister Has An Audience With The Queen
Queen Elizabeth met the Australian Prime Minister in a private audience at Buckingham Palace today.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull – a known advocate for republicanism in Australia – posted on Twitter following the audience that “although I am a Republican, I am also an Elizabethan. It was an honour to meet Her Majesty today at Buckingham Palace.”
He had previously described the Queen as “a remarkable leader of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, she has been our head of state for all of that time”, a person who has “embodied selfless public service, dignity, wisdom, leadership for longer and more magnificently than anyone alive today”.
It was the first audience Prime Minister Turnbull has had with the Queen, who wore the Australian Wattle Brooch (a gift from the country during her Coronation Tour in 1954), though they have met on previous occasions.
