Sultan of Brunei Pays State Visit to Singapore
A two-day state visit to Singapore was today begun by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. He is accompanied by his wife, Queen Saleha.
The Sultan inspected a guard of honour at the Istana, official residence of the President of Singapore, in Newton, accompanied by President Tony Tan Keng Yam. The two leaders later had a private audience inside the Istana.
The state visit, the fourth Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has made during his reign, comes to mark fifty years of the two countries’ Currency Interchangeability Agreement, which was introduced to “promote bilateral monetary cooperation”. Special commemorative bank notes in both the Brunei Dollar and the Singaporean Dollar were revealed by the Sultan and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
