Thai Princess Chulabhorn Turns Sixty

Princess Chulabhorn of Thailand, the youngest sister of the current King, today celebrates her sixtieth birthday.

The Princess was born in Bangkok on this day in 1957 as the youngest child and third daughter of the late King Bhumibol Addulyadej and Queen Sirikit. She was married in 1981 to Virayudh Tishyasarin, with whom she had two daughters – Princesses Siribhachudabhorn and Aditayadornkitikhun – before divorcing.

She studied chemistry at university, and received a Philosophy Degree in Organic Chemistry doctorate in 1985 from Mahidol University. The Princess founded the Chulabhorn Research Institute in 1987 to promote Thai scientific research efforts.
