Happy Anniversary Canada! Charles and Camilla Join Celebrations In Ottawa

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have joined Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa, which this year have the added importance of being the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.

Alongside Governor-General David Johnston and his wife Sharon, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, Charles and Camilla watched a number of performances that highlight the “cultural vitality” of Canada during official celebrations at Parliament Hill. A crowd of over 25,000 braved the rain to attend the open-air concert.

“We are celebrating a country that others look to for example. An example of fairness, and inclusion, of always striving to be better. Around the world Canada is recognized as a champion of human rights,” Prince Charles said in his speech during the festivities. He also praised the country’s military, past and present, particularly those who fought during World War One “driven by commitment to the power of freedom and democracy.”

Charles and Camilla then went back to Rideau Hall, the residence of the Canadian Governor-General, where the Prince and the Duchess were charged with inaugurating the new ‘Queen’s Entrance’ to the building before attending a reception with 150 Canadians connected to the couple’s charities. They also planted a sugar maple tree in the residence gardens.

Earlier in the day, Prince Charles had an audience with Prime Minister Trudeau, and was also invested as an Extraordinary Companion of the Order of Canada by the Governor-General. The Prince and the Duchess also visited the new Canadian History Hall at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec.
