“I’m heartbroken to say that yesterday morning I had to say goodbye to my greatest friend and horse of a lifetime, Toytown,” Zara Tindall announced in a statement this morning, confirming the death of her most well-known mount.

She described him as “the most incredible athlete with the biggest heart”, who “made my career”.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to him for the amazing times we had together. He was a huge part of my family, an amazing animal and a true champion. I will miss you forever,” Zara said.

Zara competed with Toytown – who, for medical reasons, was put down on Tuesday – for many years, winning with him individual gold medals in Eventing at the 2005 European Evening Championships and the 2006 World Equestrian Games, and team gold at the 2005 and 2007 European Championships. Toytown was inflicted with injury that prevented he and Zara competing in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.

He was retired in August 2011.
