The Countess of Frederiksborg, the ex-wife of Denmark’s Prince Joachim, has today made the announcement that she will voluntarily give up the annual appanage she receives from the Danish state, as of July 2020.

This particular date has been chosen as her and Prince Joachim’s younger son, Prince Felix, will turn 18 that month and thus no longer be a minor.

Alexandra, who was married to Prince Joachim from 1995 to 2005, currently receives 2.4million DKK from the Danish government each year as her appanage, which was determined as part of her divorce settlement.

Over the past few years, the topic of Alexandra’s appanage has been discussed – and criticised – several times in the Danish media. Many questioned why the Countess should receive such a generous amount each year, when she also has seperate sources of income through her paid board positions.
