A New Crown Prince In Saudi Arabia
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz has appointed his own son, Prince Mohammad bin Salman, as heir and first in line to the Kingdom’s throne, replacing his nephew Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who occupied this position for the past three years.
The new Crown Prince, 31, was also named deputy prime minister, and maintains his current position as Minister of Defence. He previously served as deputy Crown Prince and was third-in-line to the throne.
The announcement was made early on Wednesday morning through a Royal Decree issued by King Salman. The same Royal Decree had also relieved Prince Mohammed bin Nayef from all his current duties, including his post as Interior Minister.
This change in succession is the third since King Salman took power in 2015. He first appointed his brother Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz as Crown Prince, but later replaced him with their nephew, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.
