Flashback Friday: Japan Gains A New Crown Princess
On June 9, 1993, Japan gained a new Crown Princess as the country’s Crown Prince Naruhito married his long-time love, Masako Owada, in a traditional Shinto ceremony at the Kashikodokoro shrine in the Tokyo Imperial Palace.
The newlywed couple, after changing from traditional Japanese wedding robes, then reported their marriage to Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, the groom’s parents, who in accordance with tradition did not attend the actual ceremony. They then travelled through the streets of Tokyo in an open-top limousine.
