Welcome to the Palace! Prince Philip Hosts London Youth
The gardens of Buckingham Palace were alive with the youth of London on Wednesday as Prince Philip hosted a special gathering for young people involved with his patronage London Youth, to mark two milestones: his seventieth anniversary as their patron, and the organisation’s 130th anniversary.
He watched as dozens of teens took part in various sporting activities, including fencing and rock wall climbing, on the grounds of the Palace, joking with them all as he mingled through the crowd.
The Duke was also presented with a cake to mark the anniversaries. “I’m going to find out what’s inside,” Philip said with a smile as he cut into what turned out to be a sponge.
London Youth was the first patronage Prince Philip took on, becoming their patron in January 1947 (seven months before his engagement to the-then Princess Elizabeth was announced).
