The Busy Prince: Harry Hosts Garden Party, Meets Invictus Team
Prince Harry was out and about across London on Tuesday, first attending the launch of the British team for the 2017 Invictus Games before hosting a garden party at Buckingham Palace for the Not Forgotten Association.
At the Tower of London in the morning, Harry was present for the official launch of the 90 athletes who will be representing the UK at this year’s Invictus Games in Toronto. Doing the following reception at Plasterers Hall, Harry gave a speech where he asked the athletes – former and current military men and women who have been injured in the line of duty – to “not forget your ability to inspire others”, calling their efforts “an incredible journey to this point – you have been defiant and courageous.”
He also met 6-year-old Maya Turner during the reception, who all but stole the show as she made her own brief speech thanking Prince Harry for “helping my mummy and all her friends.”
In the afternoon, the Prince welcomed 2,500 servicemen and women, as well as veterans, to Buckingham Palace for the annual Not Forgotten garden party. He spent much time speaking with the guests, who have all been injured in some way during their military service.
Among those Prince Harry met were 105-year-old Dr William Frankland, who served in World War Two in the Army Medical Corps and was captured by Japanese forces during a tour in Singapore. Dr Frankland told the Prince how in the years after his release, he became one of the leading immunologists in Europe.
