Worker Bee: Crown Princess Mary Helps Pack Mary Foundation Backpacks

The Crown Princess of Denmark joined the production line at the LEGO Charity centre in Billund on Tuesday, helping staff to pack backpacks that are handed out to children when they arrive to crisis centres around Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

With the backpack project, our ambition was to focus on the many children who grow up in violent homes. It was most of all a symbol and a recognition of the children, but the project has proven to be much more than that. Today, childcare teachers at shelters use the backpack as an important tool in the child’s healing process,” Crown Princess Mary has said about the ‘Backpack Project’, which was implemented in 2008 by The Mary Foundation in collaboration with several other charities.

Mary was on hand to fill green backpacks with small necessities – a towel, toothbrush and hairbrush – as well as ‘comfort’ items like a red stuffed bunny, books, colouring pencils and clothing.

Since the project began, over 19,000 backpacks have been handed out to children in crisis centres after their mothers have fled domestic violence situations.
