Queen Sofia Celebrates Four Decades of Her Foundation
Queen Sofia of Spain today celebrated the fortieth anniversary of her foundation, the Queen Sofia Foundation, at the foundation’s Alzheimers Centre in Madrid. Also attending the event was King Juan Carlos I, and the reigning King and Queen.
The Foundation was formed on May 17, 1977 by the Queen. It has since carried out over 150 projects with focuses on social action, health, education, women, agriculture and the environment.
“This anniversary highlights your humanity and your commitment to the most disadvantaged people. And thank you from our hearts, for the great example that all this supposes and in the name of so many people who throughout all these years have felt close to that aid and that support,” King Felipe VI said in his speech at the event.
Queen Sofia herself also gave a speech, in which she thanked the people who have worked with her at the Foundation and on its projects, and spoke of the future goals of the Foundation: “We have decided to expand our activity in the fight against the rest of neurodegenerative diseases, which are probably the most difficult to combat.”
In addition to the Foundation’s jubilee, the Queen Sofia Foundation Alzheimers Centre is this year marking ten years of operation.
