Infanta Sofía Has Her First Holy Communion
In a ceremony at the Our Lady of Assumption Chapel in Aravaca this morning, Infanta Sofía of Spain – younger daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia – had her first holy communion alongside twenty classmates from the Primaria del Colegio Santa María de los Rosales.
The Infanta, who celebrated her tenth birthday last month, posed for photos outside the chapel as she arrived with her parents and elder sister, the Princess of Asturias.
Also attending the important event were both sets of Infanta Sofía’s grandparents (King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, and Jesus Ortiz y Alvarez and Paloma Rocasolano y Rodríguez), her great-grandmother Menchu Alvarez y Del Valle, and her godfather Prince Konstantin-Assen of Bulgaria (her godmother is her maternal grandmother). Sofía’s step-grandmother, Ana Togores, was also present.
Infanta Sofía, like her sister before her, followed school custom in wearing the school’s formal uniform for the communion ceremony. She told the waiting crowd of reporters and photographers that she was “a little bit” nervous as she and her family headed into the chapel.
The family is expected to have a luncheon afterwards at Zarzuela Palace.
