Reports: Engagement Forthcoming For Princess Mako
The Japanese media is reporting today that Princess Mako, the elder daughter of Prince Akishino and eldest grandchild of the Emperor of Japan, is set to announce her engagement to a fellow student from her alma mater, the International Christian University.
NHK, the Japanese public broadcaster, was first to publish the news today. The Japan Times is reporting the news was confirmed by the Imperial Household Agency.
Kei Komuro is named as the Princess’s prospective groom, he studied at ICU as well as Hitotsubashi University. He reportedly works for a law firm in Yokohama, and has previously promoted tourism for Kanagawa Prefecture.
Princess Mako and Mr Komuro are said to have met at a gathering about studying abroad five years ago.
An official announcement is expected to take place shortly once formal arrangements have been made, according to NHK‘s sources, who also say “the wedding will likely be held next year”.
Under current Imperial House Law, when Princess Mako marries, she – like other female members of the Imperial Family – will lose her Imperial status and become a commoner (unless she marries another member of the Imperial Family).
