Video of Crop-Top Wearing King Maha Vajiralongkorn Could Shut Down Facebook Thailand

A ten-month-old video of King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand in a pair of jeans and a yellow crop-top, a number of fake tattoos visible, reportedly walking through a German shopping centre has led to somewhat of a standoff between Thai officials and Facebook after the video went viral this month on the Thai arm of the social media giant.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) had threatened to sue Facebook Thailand if they did not remove 131 links containing the video footage. They also announced the Thai Internet Service Provider Association (TISPA) would discount the Facebook Thailand server if their request was not meet by the given 10am Tuesday local time deadline – which has since passed with no official confirmation of a next step by authorities.

178 links have already been removed by Facebook, but 131 remain accessible – a lack of proper court orders to block the links is being cited as the reason Facebook did not remove the remaining links.

The video has been deemed a “threat to national security” and a court order states that it violates lèse-majesté laws.
