Following in Grandpa’s Footsteps: Lady Louise Participates In Carriage Driving at RWHS
13-year-old Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor may look very much like her paternal grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II; but there is one interest she shares with her paternal grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh: carriage driving.
On the final day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show this morning, Louise was seen at the helm of a one-horse carriage leading the Champagne Laurent-Perrier Meet of the British Driving Society into the arena. She was in a red and black carriage that was first driven in 1943 by the Queen. The teen looked every inch the part, wearing a green tweed blazer, crisp white shirt with a brooch at the neck, and a tweed top-hat style chapeau.
Her proud father, the Earl of Wessex, was front-row centre for Louise’s entrance, taking photos on his iPhone. Also in the audience were the Countess of Wessex, Viscount Severn, the Duke of Edinburgh, her maternal grandfather Christopher Rhys-Jones, Peter and Autumn Phillips with their two daughters Savannah and Isla, and Lady Penny Brabourne.
Prince Philip, who was also seen driving during the day, took up the sport in the 1970s after he retired from polo, and helped to properly establish carriage driving as a sport.
