Princess Margriet and Princess Laurentien Attend ECF Princess Margriet Awards 2017

Last Tuesday, May 9, Princess Margriet and Princess Laurentien was present at the European Cultural Foundation Princess Margriet Awards 2017 held at the music venue and cultural center Paradiso in Amsterdam.

The laureates of the 2017 edition were: the literary writer and columnist Aslı Erdoğan from Istanbul; the novelist, orientalist scholar and journalist Navid Kermani from Cologne; the saxophonist and composer Luc Mishalle from Brussels and the visual artist Marina Naprushkina from Berlin.

According to the jury of the European Cultural Foundation, the winners were awarded because “they have shown great courage in imagining and reshaping society in the 21st century and show us how culture can help to resist polarising forces and project a future where a more inclusive Europe becomes possible.”

As President of the EFC, Princess Laurentien held a speech. The Princess praised the laureates for their courage and their determination and stressed the importance of communication and culture.

The ECF Princess Margriet Awards is given every year to European artists, intellectuals and activists. The European Cultural Foundation (ECF) was set up in Geneva in 1954. Princess Laurentien is currently the President of ECF and Extraordinary Member of the Board since 2007, when she succeeded Princess Margriet. The EFC Princess Margriet Award was established in 2008 in honour of the organisation’s former President, Princess Margriet, in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
