Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip Visit Pangbourne College
Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh paid a visit to Pangbourne College in Berkshire today to help celebrate the College’s 100th anniversary.
The royal couple attended a service in the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel to mark the centenary, before meeting current students, alumni and staff during a reception and lunch. One of the alumni that the Queen and Prince Philip spoke with – 97-year-old Commander Keith Evans – served with the Duke in the late 1940s.
“He was a bit randy but you had better not put that down,” Mr Evans said to the press after the reception of his memories of Prince Philip as a younger man.
Afterwards, Queen Elizabeth – wearing a gold, mint and pale pink tweed Angela Kelly ensemble – presented the College with new colours and awarded The Queen’s Gold Medal to two students.
Originally called The Nautical College, Pangbourne, the College was founded in 1917 with the aim of providing Merchant Naval education to young boys. In the 1960s, it evolved to offer a more academic focus. It became co-educational in 1996.
