Candles In The Windows: Fredensborg Palace Marks Liberation Anniversary

Photographs posted on the social media accounts of the Danish Monarchy Thursday evening show four candles in each of the windows of Fredensborg Palace.

Candle are lit in windows across Denmark on the night of May 4 to mark the anniversary of Denmark’s 1945 liberation from German Forces at the end of the Second World War. The news of the country’s liberation by the Allied Forces was announced on BBC radio in the evening of May 4, and much celebration was had throughout the country – the candles were lit to represent light after darkness.

Denmark was officially liberated, along with the Netherlands, on May 5, 1945 after five years of occupation.
