The Duke of York Marks Anzac Day in London Ceremonies

The sacrifice of fallen Australian and New Zealander soldiers was commemorated in London by the Duke of York on Tuesday April 25, Anzac Day.

Prince Andrew attended a dawn service at the Australian War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner, alongside the High Commissioners of both countries – Alexander Downer and Sir Jerry Mateparae. All three men laid wreaths at the base of the memorial during the service.

Later in the morning, the Duke attended Westminster Abbey’s Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving.

Anzac Day honours the soldiers who have fought and died in wars fought by the two nations, and honours the contribution of the military corps as a whole. The date – April 25 – is the day the Anzac troops landed in Gallipoli in 1915, their first major campaign of World War One, one which claimed over the lives of over 8,700 Australian and 2,700 New Zealander soldiers. King George V was present for the first Anzac Day commemoration in London in 1916.
