Crown Princess Victoria in Japan, Day Two

The Swedish Crown Princess has continued her working visit to Japan focusing on the sustainability of the world’s oceans today, April 19.

Victoria began her day with a visit to a store from the AEON retail chain, which sells both produce and homewares. The purpose behind the store visit was to learn about their sustainability practices in regards to the seafood they sell – the company is aiming to have 10% of their fish come from sustainable farming by 2020. The Princess was given a walk-through of the store, and gifted sets of chopsticks to take home – two in children’s sizes, and two in adult’s.

“They are on a basic level. And then some to us on a more advanced level,” Victoria joked as she received first the smaller chopsticks – for Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar – before receiving the larger sets.

Afterwards it was on to the United Nations University in Tokyo, where the Crown Princess – who was wearing a vintage blue and red polka dot dress originally seen on her mother, Queen Silvia, in 1980 – gave a speech at a symposium entitled Public Engagement for Global Goals with a Special Focus on Sustainable Oceans. Japan’s Princess Takamado was present for the symposium.

“What we are really talking about is our ability to feed a growing global population. Fish is the largest source of animal protein in the world. But almost 60 percent of all stocks are already fully fished. 30 percent are even overfished. Let there be no doubt: the situation is urgent!” Princess Victoria said during her speech, emphasising that people, as consumers, are the ones who have real power when it comes to an increase in sustainable practices as asking the right questions of suppliers will force them to change their practices.

In the evening, Victoria attended a dinner at Tofuya Ukai that Princess Takamado also attended.
