The Princess Royal on Visit to Ghana To Mark 60 Years of Independence

This year the Republic of Ghana celebrates sixty years of independence from the United Kingdom. To mark the anniversary year, the Princess Royal has spent two days this week in the country.

Arriving in Accra on April 4, the Princess began her visit with an audience with the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, at Flagstaff House. She then visited the Commonwealth War Graves at Christiansborg War Cemetery and laid a wreath in honour of fallen soldiers.

Anne’s afternoon was spent visiting a school supported by the Varkey Foundation, a not-for-profit that is dedicated to improving education standards of vulnerable children world-wide. Here, she was shown the technology used to provide education to children in rural areas via video conferencing. She also visited Mansuki Ghana Limited Naturals before an evening reception hosted by the British High Commissioner to mark sixty years of Ghanan independence.

On April 5, the Princess had a meeting with the Asantehene, the monarch of the Kingdom of Ashanti and Ashantiland. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II received the Princess at Manhyia Palace, his residence in Kumasi, and said her visit was an embodiment of her “commitment to the development of women and girls which are fundamental to the development of any country.”

Afterwards, Princess Anne visited two of educational facilities – God’s Heritage Academy and Wesley College of Education – that are supported by two of her patronages, Opportunity International UK and Voluntary Service Overseas.

Ghana was previously known as the British Crown Colony of the Gold Coast, and was the first Sub-Saharan nation to achieve independence from its European colonisers. Princess Anne has visited the country twice before.

The Princess Royal is now in Sierra Leone.
