Philippe and Mathilde Add Their Names To The Fredensborg Windows

The Belgian King and Queen have completed their state visit to Denmark this morning, and before they departed from Amalienborg in Copenhagen, they partook in a unique tradition of the Danish Royal Family.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde became the latest in a long, illustrious line of individuals to sign their names on panes of glass that will be fitted to an existing window frame of Fredensborg Palace. The window panes of the Palace feature hundreds of signatures of visiting heads of state, royals and historically significant people who have stayed at the Palace.

The custom began during the reign of King Christian IX and his wife, Louise of Hesse-Kassel, who has the oldest dated window pane signature (1841). Family members and guests used to sign the window panes while they were in their frames, however now panes of glass are made specifically to be signed then replace an existing window pane. Queen Margrethe decides the final location of each pane.
