The Crown Prince and Princess of Norway on Monday paid a visit to the district of Bjerke, in the north of Oslo. A high percentage of the district’s population is made up of immigrants or children whose parents were immigrants, providing a variety of cultures to the area.

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit first visited the contemporary circus, where they watched acrobatic and dance performances, before participating in a few circus skills lessons – namely juggling. The circus is designed to bring together people of all backgrounds to ensure they feel included in society.

Afterwards it was on to the cultural centre that is the meeting space of the organisation ReLove, whose purpose is to recycle the community’s products into other goods, and then to the Bjerke Lydstudio.

The last stop of the day was Isdammen, where the Prince and Princess spent time sitting around a campfire roasting sausages with members of the community, discussing a variety of topics that are central to Bjerke. Among those the royals spoke with was Sathiaruby “Ruby” Sivaganesh, who runs a volunteer organisation to help female immigrants feel at home in the community.
