Chapeaux, My Chapeaux! Princess Beatrix Opens Hat Exhibition
Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands is known for many things, one of them being her large collection of hats (affectionately known as ‘cheese wheels’ by some). And on Wednesday, at Museum Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, the Princess opened an exhibition showcasing a portion of that collection.
Chapeaux! The Hats of Queen Beatrix contains 111 of the Bea’s most well-known hats from her 33-year reign, the have been worn to engagements ranging from Prinsjesdag to every-day visits around the country. According to the three milliners responsible for the majority of the hat collection, Princess Beatrix’s hats are always “designed in conjunction with the whole outfit”.
“Long before there was branding and logos, you already had your hats. Those were iconic for your reign,” Michel Maarseveen, the Museum’s director, said to the Princess during the opening.
Ironically, Princess Beatrix did not wear a hat during this visit.
