Camilla Helps Mark Centenary of No. 100 Squadron at RAF Leeming

As Honorary Air Commodore of the RAF Leeming base station in North Yorkshire, the Duchess of Cornwall today visited the base to attend centenary celebrations of the No. 100 Squadron that served in both World Wars.

The Duchess viewed a parade and Hawk jet flypast by the Squadron before delivering a speech to the servicemen, recalling their lengthy history as a RAF unit. “On this very special occasion we honour the heroism and valour of our predecessors. But, let’s not forget that as today marks the passing of the baton to a new generation of airmen, the next chapter of this great Squadron is yet to be written,” she said.

After that, Camilla – who donned a blue dress and coat with a black fur hat for the event – spent time speaking with past and present servicemen and women from the Squadron, including one 95-year-old who is the last remaining No 100 Squadron member that served in the defence of Singapore in the 1930s.

The No. 100 Squadron was established as a night bombing unit in February 1917. It was disbanded several times in the years after World War Two, before it was reformed in 1972.
