Flashback Friday: Happy St Patrick’s Day From Elizabeth & Jean!
March 17, 1997: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was joined by Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Jean for the presentation of shamrocks to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards in the traditional St Patrick’s Day ceremony at the Elizabeth Barracks in Surrey.
The Grand Duke, who abdicated in 2000, served as a volunteer in the Irish Guards during the Second World War, before undertaking military training at Sandhurst and eventually rising the ranks to become a Captain in the Regiment. In 1984, he was appointed the Colonel of the Regiment by Queen Elizabeth II.
