Crown Princess Victoria Returns To Work At Baltic Sea Conference

At the Stockholm International Fairs & Congress Centre, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden made her first official engagement in several weeks as she delivered the opening speech at the Baltic Sea Future conference.

She began by receiving a poem written in 1858 by the man who would later become Oscar II, and juxtaposed the underlying theme of the poem with the issues the Baltic Sea faces today: “He writes of a sailor fighting for his life against the raging dark waters…the threat it poses to man. Today, the tables have turned. Now, man is a danger to the sea. Filling it with plastic, poisoning the fish and suffocating the sea beds.”

Victoria spoke about how important it was for measures to be taken immediately to preserve the health and quality of the sea, and make it sustainable again.

The conference is hosted by a collaboration of the Stockholm University, the City of Stockholm, and the Foundation for Sustainable Seas. 350 participants – officials, business owners, and scholars – from around the Baltic region are attending the conference. The purpose of the conference is to provide knowledge and tools to encourage municipalities to “increase their ambition to make the Baltic Sea healthy”.

Princess Victoria is one of the advocates of the advocate for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on water and health.
