Princess Mabel Speaks At ‘She Decides’ Conference in Brussels
Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau, a staunch advocate for the rights of young girls, has today spoken at the ‘She Decides’ conference in Brussels that is being held to have politicians and world leaders place the “rights of women and girls on the top of the international agenda” in the coming years.
She said that it was imperative to “ensure that girls can make informed decisions anywhere in the world about their own bodies, reproduction and their future” and that “it would be a great step forward if the taboos that exist” around sex can be broken, to “ensure that young people have access to contraception”.
Mabel was attending as the Chairperson of the organisation Girls Not Brides.
The conference was jointly organised by Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. The attending organisations have pledged €181million to the ‘She Decides Fund’ set up by the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen, to give girls and women “the right to decide whether, when and with whom to have children”.
