Queen Letizia Debuts The Fleur de Lys Tiara During Argentinian State Visit Gala

The Queen of Spain made the day of royal watchers everywhere Wednesday night at the gala banquet for the President of Argentina as she debuted the ‘biggest gun’ in the collection of tiaras at her disposal: the diamond Fleur de Lys tiara that dates back to Queen Victoria Eugenia.

Paired with a simple black evening gown from Felipe Varela and the sky blue sash of the Argentine Order of the Liberator General San Martín, La Buena (as the tiara is known) – though a welcome surprise – has divided opinion on whether the incredibly large tiara is too large for Queen Letizia’s small frame. Her outfit selection however was the perfect backdrop for the historic tiara that has only been worn by Spanish Queens (and one Countess who would have been Queen had the monarchy not been overthrown) since it entered the family in 1906.

Earlier in the day, Letizia and King Felipe welcomed President Mauricio Macri and his wife Juliana Awada for their state visit in a grand welcoming ceremony in the Court of the Armory of the Royal Palace, the first time the ceremony has been held there.
