President Trump To Pay State Visit To UK After Accepting Invitation

There will be a state visit from the United States of America to the United Kingdom sometime this year, as new President Donald Trump accepted an invitation delivered to him by Prime Minister Theresa May on behalf of Queen Elizabeth during the former’s White House visit today.

“I have today been able to convey Her Majesty the Queen’s hope that President Trump and the First Lady would pay a state visit to the United Kingdom later this year and I’m delighted that the President has accepted that invitation,” the Prime Minister said during a press conference, calling the invitation “an indication at the strength and importance of the special relationship” held by the UK and the USA. Invitations for state visits are issued by the Queen at the request of the British government.

It is unknown when exactly the state visit will take place, or whether it will be hosted at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle (though renovations at Buckingham Palace may remove it from the equation).

According to this list provided on the British Royal Family’s website, this will be only the third proper state visit from the US during Queen Elizabeth’s reign (following President Obama’s 2011 visit, and President George W. Bush’s 2003 visit; they do not list President Reagan’s 1982 visit nor President Clinton’s 1994 visit – the United States Department of State Office of the Historian refers to both those visits as state visit though). Many previous Presidents have paid official and informal visits however.
