A Golden Wedding Anniversary in The Netherlands

Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and her husband, Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven, today celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. A new photograph of the couple was released last week to celebrate the milestone, and yesterday two more were released featuring their children and grandchildren.

The couple will celebrate privately, on a Caribbean cruise with their children and grandchildren in February. Margriet and Pieter have given an interview to Blauw Bloed which will air on January 14.

Their wedding took place at the Sint-Jacobskerk in The Hague on January 10, 1967 (the required civil ceremony was held at The Hague Town Hall earlier in the day). It was followed by a reception at Huis ten Bosch, where a lunch was given in the Orange Hall.

Margriet’s wedding dress was created by the same designer as her sister Beatrix’s gown the year before, Caroline Bergé-Farwick of Maison Linette. The cloque silk gown was adorned with embroidered daisies, with the bodice and train featuring pearl-studded daisies. A short tulle veil was anchored by the Pearl Button Tiara.

There had been considerable opposition from both families about the wedding, as Queen Juliana was the only one who approved of a Princess marrying a Dutch commoner. Nonetheless, Margriet and Pieter were happily married and have been great supports to the royal family over the past fifty years.
